Cockroach Infestation

Cockroaches are resilient pests that often remain hidden in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, utility areas, wall voids, cabinets, and other warm, dark spaces where food and moisture are available.

They can spread through homes, apartments, restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, warehouses, and commercial properties by moving through wall openings, plumbing penetrations, shared utility lines, deliveries, boxes, appliances, and personal belongings. Common warning signs include live cockroaches, droppings, egg cases, shed skins, grease-like smear marks, unusual odors, and nighttime activity.

Because cockroaches reproduce quickly and can remain hidden in difficult-to-reach areas, early identification is important for limiting the infestation and reducing the risk of continued spread. Atlas K9 provides professional cockroach inspection and extermination services to identify areas of activity, determine likely harbourage points, and develop a targeted treatment and monitoring plan based on the property and severity of the infestation.

Professional inspection and extermination are generally more effective than do-it-yourself methods, which may only kill visible insects while leaving hidden cockroaches, egg cases, and nesting areas untreated.

What Are Cockroach Infestations?

Cockroaches are highly adaptable insects that seek out food, water, warmth, and protected hiding areas. Once established inside a property, they can reproduce rapidly and spread into multiple rooms or units.

Cockroaches are frequently found in homes, apartment buildings, restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, food-processing environments, offices, warehouses, schools, and other properties where food, moisture, and shelter are available.

They commonly hide beneath appliances, inside cabinets, behind refrigerators, around plumbing, beneath sinks, inside wall voids, around electrical equipment, along baseboards, and within cracks and crevices.

Because much of a cockroach population may remain concealed, visible cockroaches can represent only a portion of the overall infestation. Atlas K9 combines professional inspection, targeted treatment, extermination, and follow-up monitoring to help identify and control cockroach activity.

The Cockroach Life Cycle

Cockroaches develop through three primary stages: egg, nymph, and adult.

01
Eggs

Female cockroaches produce egg cases known as oothecae. Depending on the species, these may be carried by the female for a period of time or deposited in protected areas such as cracks, cabinets, wall voids, or near food and moisture sources.

Because egg cases can remain concealed and may contain multiple eggs, they can contribute to recurring activity if they are not addressed during treatment.

02
Nymphs

After hatching, young cockroaches progress through several nymph stages before reaching adulthood.

Nymphs resemble adult cockroaches but are smaller and generally lack fully developed wings. They frequently remain hidden close to food, water, and established harbourage areas.

Their small size allows them to enter extremely narrow spaces, making early infestations difficult to detect through casual inspection.

03
Adults

Adult cockroaches can survive for extended periods when food, moisture, and suitable shelter are available.

Once mature, they can continue reproducing and expanding the infestation into nearby rooms, adjoining units, wall voids, utility areas, and other protected spaces.

Effective treatment must address visible adults as well as hidden nymphs, egg cases, and established harbourage areas.

How Cockroaches Find Food and Shelter

Cockroaches are attracted to food, moisture, warmth, and protected hiding locations.

They can survive on a wide range of food sources, including crumbs, grease, food residue, garbage, pet food, cardboard, and organic debris.

Moisture is also an important factor. Leaking pipes, condensation, standing water, damp basements, sinks, drains, and appliance areas can create favourable conditions for cockroach activity.

Cockroaches generally remain hidden during the day and emerge when the environment is quiet. Seeing cockroaches during daylight hours may sometimes indicate significant activity or overcrowding within established harbourage areas.

Where Do Cockroaches Hide?

Cockroaches prefer dark, warm, protected spaces close to food and water.

Common hiding locations include:

  • Beneath and behind refrigerators
  • Under stoves, ovens, and dishwashers
  • Inside kitchen and bathroom cabinets
  • Beneath sinks
  • Around plumbing penetrations
  • Inside wall voids
  • Along baseboards and trim
  • Behind electrical outlets and appliances
  • Inside cracks and crevices
  • Around drains and utility areas
  • Inside cardboard boxes and stored materials
  • Behind commercial kitchen equipment
  • Near garbage and recycling areas
  • Inside mechanical and boiler rooms
  • Around laundry equipment
  • Within shared walls in apartment and multi-unit buildings

As an infestation grows, cockroaches may spread farther from the original harbourage area in search of additional food, water, and shelter.

What Causes a Cockroach Infestation?

Cockroaches may enter a property through cracks, plumbing openings, utility lines, drains, doors, deliveries, cardboard boxes, appliances, furniture, and other transported items.

In apartment buildings and other multi-unit properties, they may also move between units through wall voids, plumbing systems, utility penetrations, hallways, and shared spaces.

Food residue, accessible garbage, standing water, leaking plumbing, clutter, and warm protected areas can make a property more attractive to cockroaches and help an infestation become established.

However, cockroach activity is not limited to poorly maintained properties. Even clean homes and commercial facilities can experience infestations if cockroaches are introduced from nearby units, deliveries, equipment, or other sources.

Common Signs of Cockroaches

Possible signs of cockroach activity include:

  • Live adult cockroaches or nymphs
  • Cockroaches seen at night
  • Cockroaches appearing during daylight hours
  • Small dark droppings
  • Egg cases
  • Shed skins
  • Dark or grease-like smear marks
  • Unusual musty or oily odours
  • Activity beneath appliances or inside cabinets
  • Cockroaches near sinks, drains, or plumbing
  • Recurring activity after using store-bought sprays or traps

Finding one cockroach does not always reveal the size or location of the infestation. Cockroaches are highly secretive, and established populations may remain concealed inside walls, cabinetry, appliances, and other inaccessible areas.

A professional inspection can help determine the extent of the activity and identify areas requiring treatment.

Cockroaches and Health Concerns

Cockroaches can contaminate surfaces and food as they move through garbage areas, drains, kitchens, bathrooms, and other environments.

Their bodies, droppings, shed skins, and other debris may also contribute to indoor allergens, particularly in properties with significant activity.

Cockroach infestations can be especially problematic in restaurants, healthcare facilities, apartment buildings, hotels, food-service environments, and other locations where sanitation and contamination risks are important concerns.

Because visible activity may represent only part of the infestation, Atlas K9 focuses on identifying harbourage areas and treating the source of the problem rather than only eliminating individual cockroaches that are seen.
